Climate in Antwerp

Climate in Antwerp

Belgium weather follows maritime patters and is usually mild. Belgium weather is at its sunniest during the months of May and August, although both April and September retain an alluring and extremely pleasant disposition.
Being on the same latitude as southern England, Flanders –where Antwerp is situated and is the region’s capital city – enjoys a similar type of climate. In other words, Antwerp weather is characterised by sunny days with rainy, grey days often leaving a dent on the prevailing fine conditions at any given time of the year. Antwerp’s temperatures average around 6°C / 43°F during January, rising to 23°C / 73°F in July.

WHEN TO VISIT

Late spring: Spring time is a great time to visit Antwerp if only because the northern European days are sufficiently long and beaches, highways, museums and other places of interest having been swarmed by summer crowd.

Summer: If you are looking for a bargain on hotel prices, then July and August are your best bet, since most Belgians are also on vacation during the same period. A word of warning though: since this is vacation time for locals, a large number of restaurants are also closed. Plus, while July and August are the hottest of the year, they are also the wettest.

Fall: To have full access to all the attractions then you should plan your visit during September and October. The weather is still pleasantly warm, with the added bonus of fewer tourists in the area. Just before October rolls in temperatures begin to drop sharply. Autumn in Antwerp is usually associated with slightly raised levels of rainfall and shorter days.

Winter: Even during its coldest month (January) temperatures only rarely fall bellow freezing time, therefore the time between December and March when the weather is surprisingly mild should feature high on your list.

Although snow rarely bothers to pay Antwerp a visit, rain, fog and heavy morning mists occasionally do pay their respects, more frequently so in likely January and February. One of the biggest obstacles one has to face when visiting Antwerp during the winter season is the distinctive lack of sunshine: the sun comes out around 9 and disappears again around 4
